hey there, some fun things happened lately.

THAT MEANS NEW BIRBOBLOG

recently I had the blessing to the THEE Hot Stove Jimmy LIVE for their 30th Anniversary show! for those unaware, they're a chicago ska punk/kinda horrorcore/sometimes metal inspired group from the 90s who are very important to the chicago scene! my ears were blessed and also drowned and significantly quieter after their show and I loved every second of it.

a live show poster of a man sitting on a chair, head pointed up with a burning book resting on his face. text reads midwest ska fest presents hot stove jimmy salute 30th anniversary vinyl release on jump up records and tapes. featuring the crombies, run and punch, and burn rebuild, with dj chuck wren spinning ska jams all night

that means I'll be going over each band that played one by one, in order of appearance on stage! (their parts of the show hyperlinked in the photos I took of them!)

starting with Burn Rebuild!

these guys sounded great! they were very much skate punk/emo, not ska, but honestly I didn't mind it at all! people often give the opening bands a lot of shit, and I can see some less kind people be like "yeah but they were kind of sore thumbs" which yeah, but does it mean they didn't sound tight or good up there? I think they did! tasty licks, fun solos, 90% sure there was a tapping segment in there! these guys know their way around their instruments! there was some issues with the frontman's bass at first, technical issues, wasn't picking up on the amps for a minute so he had to borrow another band's. but they jumped right into it after, and yeah, I found myseld quickly dancing! it was a good time! hope they release something new soon if they can!

RUN AND PUNCH

NEEEEEWWW TOOOOOOOOONEEE REPRE-FUCKING-SENT! oh my god these folks ruled the night for me, most I danced that whole night and GOD is the vocalist amazing, LISTEN TO HIS VOCALS. YES. TRANS FLAG COLOURED STAGE LIGHTS TOO. listen, I could talk about them or you could just click on their photo and listen to them do their thing and then stream their shit on spotify for me, okay? thanks

The Crombies

ah, classic 2-tone. and talk about stage presence! the vocalist jumping into the crowd, the lead guitarist constantly moving, showing to the crowd, what a sound! (I'm so funny for rhyming) these guys are also super important to chicago ska, despite what youtube views may say, according to my dad. and I can see it, seeing as these guys have been around forever! nothing but lots of fun, super glad I got to see them live.

you ever wanna hear the loudest fucking thing ever? me too, you can see me dancing in the crowd next to my dad. these guys fucking rip, I mean that, the guitarist was bleeding from his thumb at the end from how much he was jamming, the horrorcore and metal influences shining super bright in the instrumentals, wrapped in a nice ska burrito that was such a satisfying closing band. I also love the keyboardest changing wigs like every other song, good bit! for their first live show in a REAL hot minute, really feels like these guys never left the stage! great energy and preformance. this entire show was a great time, and super happy I picked up an LP with my dad! wish I got to some run and punch merch......... but there's always a next time! definitely going to keep them on the mind from here on out!

a special thanks to my dad for offering me a chance to go, was definitely worth it! next time, I'll probably bring hearing protection though, rofl
